The 2024 primary elections are coming up soon! Here are 5 things to know about the 2024 primaries in NC:
- Unaffiliated voters can vote in NC primary elections! Unaffiliated voters are eligible to request a Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, or nonpartisan ballot (if available). They may not vote ballots of the Green party, as they conduct closed primaries, and the No Labels party will not hold a primary in 2024. Learn more: Review Your Registration
- Some 17 year-olds are eligible to vote in the primaries, if they will turn 18 by election day (November 5, 2024). 16 and 17 year-olds can also preregister in NC. Click here to learn more.
- Same-day registration will be available during early voting, but not on election day. Early voting starts on February 15 and runs through March 2. Make sure to bring proof of address, provide a valid mailing address, and bring a photo ID if you plan to register and vote same-day. Click here to learn more.
- It will be more difficult to vote by mail in 2024. The grace period to return absentee ballots has been removed (they must be received by your county’s board of elections by 7:30pm on election day) and voter ID laws have made absentee voting more complicated. If you or someone you know are planning to vote by mail, request and return your absentee ballot as soon as possible. Absentee ballot requests open in January. Learn more: Vote by Mail
- Your primary ballot may not include all offices. Local, state, and federal offices are all on the ballot in 2024, but only the offices where more than one candidate is running in your party will appear on your primary ballot (or, if you’re unaffiliated, on the party’s ballot you choose to vote).
