Voting rights Champions

Clear information. Confident voters.

About

Through our Voting Rights Champions program, launched in 2020, You Can Vote trains and equips trusted community organizations to empower North Carolina voters in their networks. The program is grounded in the belief that informed participation is the foundation of a healthy democracy, and that trusted, local messengers are essential to making that participation possible.

Who can join

Any nonpartisan* group or organization, including (but not limited to):

  • Associations

  • Businesses

  • Colleges/Universities

  • Community colleges

  • Community groups

  • Faith groups

  • Health care providers

  • Libraries

  • Nonprofits

* Candidate and party committees, 501(c)(4) nonprofits and other partisan groups are not eligible.

What Champions do

  • Educate: Inform voters about elections and voting rights. Drive signups for Ballot Builder, You Can Vote’s free, nonpartisan candidate-research guide.

  • Register: Register new voters. Review registrations of current voters and update if necessary. Help “Registration Repair” voters fix their registrations.

  • Mobilize: Participate in get-out-the-vote drives. Attend post-election canvass meetings of county boards of elections.

What Champions get

  • Training: Priority access to in-person or virtual training conducted by experienced You Can Vote staff. We train your organization's representatives to deliver accurate, nonpartisan, evidence-based messaging and resources to NC voters in your community.

  • Toolkits: Exclusive access to valuable toolkits containing critical, up-to-the-minute information and resources to help you educate, engage and mobilize voters in your communities and schools.

  • Materials: Time-tested print products to empower your representatives to register, educate and mobilize voters. Co-branded materials available at cost.

  • Guidance: Help is just a call or click away. Whether you're planning an event, creating materials or simply want to brainstorm, You Can Vote staff is at your service whenever you need us.

  • Connection: Voting Rights Champions can network with a growing group of pro-democracy and civic-engagement organizations in North Carolina working towards common goals.

  • Recognition: Voting Rights Champions receive shoutouts on social media, in our newsletters, on our website and in our impact reports.

What Champions don’t get is extra work and additional commitments. We work with Champions to supplement, strengthen and streamline their existing civic-engagement efforts — not add to their plates or disrupt what's working.

Funding

  • New for 2026! Organizations that are ready to commit to a higher level of participation in the program can apply for a mini-grant ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

  • Mini-grant recipients commit to receive training from You Can Vote staff, provide regular reports on civic engagement committees, and participate in regular check-in meetings.

  • Interested in our mini-grants? Sign up now and we’ll get in touch.

Testimonial

In 2024, Advance Community Health was proud to work with our long-time community partner, You Can Vote, to provide voter registration access for our patient population through an exciting grant from Vot-ER. This grant supported Community Health Centers like ours to expand voter registration and voter education efforts. In addition to hosting their fantastic staff on-site at our clinics, the You Can Vote team was knowledgeable, respectful, and incredibly helpful in making sure our patients and visitors had welcoming accurate information.

Our project was a wonderful success, and we could not have asked for a better partner to see that come to fruition. Their team brought excellent experience with the laws and processes of the Wake County Board of Elections, while also being thoughtful and kind in every interaction whether someone was registering to vote or simply checking their voter status. We truly could not have hoped for a better partner committed to being a trusted resource for the communities we serve. Now with the upcoming election cycle, we are eager to work once more with You Can Vote, their staff, and their leadership to fulfill another program to register new voters.
