Voting in North Carolina Jails
2022 Voting in NC Jails Report
Of North Carolina's 100 counties, 97 have a jail. Supervised by the county sheriff, these jails hold approximately 20,000 people per day. Contrary to popular belief, many of these people do not lose their right to vote while they are in jail. Unlike people who are currently incarcerated for a felony conviction, and unable to vote in North Carolina, many jail registrants are indeed eligible. In recent years, groups like You Can Vote have been allowed to provide voter services in a number of North Carolina jails. Learn about our work to empower, educate, and register voters in NC jails in our 2022 report.
