STEP 1: Check your voter registration

STEP 2. Download and complete the application

Complete the paper application. Watch the video or view our NC Voter Registration Application tips (en español) to learn how to correctly fill out the application. Make sure you complete all required sections (in red), fill out the form using a black ink pen, and sign and date the form at the bottom.
Citizens registering to vote in North Carolina for the first time must confirm their identity by providing either the last four digits of their Social Security number, an NC DMV drivers license number, or an NC DMV ID number on their voter registration application (in box 3).

STEP 3. Return the completed application
Return the completed paper registration application to your county board of elections.

Who can register
If you can answer YES to all of these questions:
Are you a US citizen who will be at least 18 years old on Election Day?
Will you have lived in NC for at least 30 days on Election Day?
Are you not currently serving a felony sentence and not currently on probation or parole for a felony conviction? People who have felony convictions have their rights reinstated after their sentence (including probation and parole) is complete, but they must re-register to vote.

Voting deadlines
Submit your registration at least 25 days before Election Day. Click here for upcoming election dates.
Missed the deadline? You can register and vote on the same day during early voting. Same-day registration is available at all early voting locations in NC.
To use same-day registration at an early voting site, you will need a valid voter photo ID (click here to see accepted IDs) and one of the following:
NC drivers license, OR
Other government photo ID with name and current address, OR
Utility bill, bank statement, or payroll stub with name and current address, OR
Student photo ID with a school document showing the student’s address, OR
Any document from any government agency with the voter’s name and current address
