Education
Federal, state, and local officials are responsible for funding and maintaining public education systems. Congress and the NC legislature decide the budget allocated to each school district. The NC Superintendent sets standards for what is taught and oversees teacher preparation and licensing. School board members decide what is taught in their district, which textbooks are used, what is required to graduate, and who is hired as the local superintendent. School board members draw district maps to decide which students go to which schools. County Commissioners pass the local budget for public schools and community colleges and decide on the timing and amount of local bonds to support schools.
