Federal and state lawmakers can pass laws to protect renters from discrimination. They can regulate banks and lenders and create tax caps for sellers and buyers. City council can plan for and fund affordable housing programs, help ensure the safety and access of local housing stock, fund maintenance for public housing, and fund eviction diversion or programs for unhoused persons. Local clerks of court decide on when to evict someone and how evictions are enforced.
